Every year I put together several DIY gift baskets with a theme. This year I am going with a movie snack night theme. It will have popcorn, candy, chocolate, popcorn boxes, and... wine... yes, everyone needs a little help to get through the holidays *. If you need to make a bunch of gifts for the holidays that are under $20 each, then keep reading. The prices below are in relation to 1 basket.
First, head on over to Dollarama! Here's what you'll need to pick up:
- Christmas gift basket with cellophane - $2.00 each. I buy these every year for making my holiday gift baskets. It's sturdy and comes with the cellophane bag, ribbon, and tag. Plus, it's card board, so it can just go to recycling after.
- Glass Jar with Lid - $1.50. This will hold the popcorn kernels, and then can be re purposed afterwards
- Chocolate and Candy of your choice ($7.00 - $8.00). For my baskets, there will be a Snickers $0.82, a Twix $0.82, box of Nerds ($1.00), Reese's peanut butter cups ($0.82), chocolate covered cranberries ($2.00), sunflower seeds ($2.00), and Mentos ($0.50). Hey, you might need fresh breath at the end of the evening, wink-wink, "Netflix and chill".
- Cardboard popcorn boxes ($0.50). These are near the party aisle and come in a set of 8 for $2. We're going to put 2 boxes per basket.
- Paper Lunch bags ($0.20). We're going to put 3-4 paper lunch bags per basket. I'm going to give instructions to make your own microwave popcorn in a paper bag.
- Wrapping tissue $0.20
- a bag of popcorn kernels. My best guess here is that each gift will get $0.75 worth of kernels.
- Head over to the LCBO (wine and liquor store for those of you not in Ontario) and look around the cash registers. There are small bottles of wine and liquor/spirits. I went with a small bottle of Ice Wine for $4.
- * Please know I'm not condoning drinking, and if you are gifting this to someone with an addiction, or they're underage, omit the alcohol
- With my gift baskets, I'm including instructions how to make popcorn in a paper bag in the microwave, and instructions how to make stove top popcorn. You can download them as an image file below. I printed these out on cardstock and cut them out as shapes.
- You could also make nice labels/tags for the popcorn kernels, but I was getting pinched for time (and patience) so I skipped this step.
Ok, you've got everything now. Wash and thoroughly dry the jars, and then put some kernels in the jar, screw on the lid. Crumple up 1-2 pieces of wrapping tissue and place it in the bottom of the basket. Play around with different ways to display your basket.. Put in inside the cellophane bag, tie it with a bow. badda-boom, badda-bing. Done!
Bonus for those of you if you scrolled all the way here... Did you know you can make popcorn in the microwave with a paper lunch bag? I keep kernels and lunch bags in my desk at work so I can have an afternoon popcorn snack.
Paper Bag Popcorn Method:
Step One: Measure 1/4 cup popcorn kernels into a lunchbox-sized paper bag.
Step Two: Loosely fold just the very top of the bag over so the kernels don't spill out.
Step Three: Microwave until there are more than 3 seconds between popping sounds. ...
Step Four: Carefully remove bag and enjoy!
Oops, the Reese's PB cups missed this photoshoot, but are in the final basket
